The waters surrounding Saipan are truly some of the most beautiful in the world. Crystal clear seas
offer great visibility for diving and on most days you can expect a visibility of 70feet /20 meters or more. Combine this with extensive coral reefs and World War II-era wreck sites, it is easy to see why Saipan
is home to some of the most famous dive sites in the world.
Perhaps the most famous site is the Grotto. For advanced divers, the Grotto is a must see. This
magnificent natural sink-hole cave is home to a wide variety of marine life including juvenile white-tip
sharks and sea turtles. If you venture outside of the Grotto through one of the three passages leading
to the open ocean, you can expect to be met with scores of reef fish and other surprises.
Other beach dive sites include Obyan, Aquarium, Lau Lau, and Wing Beach. These are all wonderful underwater gardens teeming with fish, corals, sea stars, eels, and other nautical creatures awaiting
your curious eyes.
Accessible by boat, you can explore a WWII sunken ship and a WWII fighter plane that both now rest in Saipan's lagoon. Other popular boat dives include Eagle Ray City (which as the name suggests, is an
area where eagle rays hover in the current), Ice cream and Dimple coral mounds, and Naftan wall
dive - just to name a few.
The nearby island of Tinian also offers many great dive sites and is easily accessible by boat. In
about 45 minutes you can arrive at the Tinian Grotto or check out some dumped ammunitions and
other WWII relics at the Tinian Dump Cove site.
Whether beginner or advanced diver, Saipan is your diving destination! |
